Our Doctors

Dr James Burden

Partner

Dr Burden qualified from Leicester University in 2000, training as a GP in

Northamptonshire and then working in Kettering and then Corby. As a GP he has helped his practices develop educational courses for student nurses, medical students and trainee GPs.  After several years in this area he developed an expertise in Safeguarding Children and Adults. He has worked as the

Safeguarding Lead GP for Northamptonshire and then Coventry & Rugby Clinical Commissioning Groups.

In 2019 he co-authored the Royal College of GPs guide to Safeguarding Children.

Dr Dan Pickering

Senior Partner

Dr Daniel Pickering qualified at Leicester in 2000. He was previously in Practice at Lutterworth before joining us in December 2010. He has a special interest in occupational medicine and joint injections.

He is the lead for our Branch surgery in Gretton. He is a GP trainer for the East Midlands Deanery, providing training and mentoring to GP trainee’s that are based in the practice.

As well as spending time with his young family in his spare time Dan likes to run and cycle plus DIY and gardening.

Dr Viren Mistry

Dr Mistry graduated from Leicester Medical School in 2003. As part of his GP training he was based at the practice as a registrar in 2005 and 2008. He subsequently joined the practice as a partner in February 2010. He does a twice weekly surgery at the Uppingham School during term time.

In addition to his main role Dr Mistry also carries out regular joint injections. He has completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education and is a GP trainer.

Away from work Dr Mistry enjoys spending time with his wife and two young daughters. He has taken up running as a regular activity and loves to travel when possible.

Dr Anu Kalra

I graduated with MBBS degree from India in 2002 and then did my Masters in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Having worked in hospital in O&G department for few years I trained and qualified as a GP in 2011.

I have been a GP principal since 2013 and joined the practice as a partner in June 2015. I am the lead GP for our branch surgery at Barrowden and I have a special interest in women’s health, diabetes ,dermatology and minor surgery.

I love being a GP and caring for my patients. Away from work I enjoy spending time with my young family, as well as enjoying hobbies like Yoga, cooking and am also a keen cricket enthusiast.

Dr Andrew Wass

After qualifying from Nottingham University in 1991 and completing my ‘house jobs’ I joined the VTS in Stockport and qualified as a GP in 1994.

I have worked continually ever since as a GP, initially as a locum but for the last 17 years as a full time principal. My areas of special interest include minor surgery, palliative care, I.T. and medicines management.

My ethos has been to offer a friendly, accessible service and in simple terms provide a level of care that I would like if I was a patient at the practice. I thrive on reflection and enjoy looking at ways ‘to work smarter not harder’;.

I think it is vital to develop a strong, respectful relationship with the patients I care for. I live with my partner in Ketton and really enjoy living in England’s smallest county.

Dr Egle Price

M.D., Phd.

Dr Price completed her training in Family Medicine in Vilnius University, Lithuania, in 1994.

She then defended PhD thesis in Family Medicine at the Vilnius University in 2001 and worked there as researcher and GP trainer. She was working as a General Practitioner in Lithuania until 2009 and has since been living in the UK and working here as a GP.

Dr Price joined the Uppingham surgery in 2012 and she enjoys living in the UK (Leicestershire) and working in Rutland. She continues her research and training activities in the UK and is also involved in training of General Practice trainers internationally. She believes that her personal relationship with her patients is one of the important values in Family Medicine.

Dr Price loves working in teams and in her spare time Dr Price is a passionate gardener and loves cooking. She also enjoys travelling and exploring other cultures.

BSc (Hons), MBChB, MRCGPAfter initially qualifying and worked as an NHS Audiologist, I decided to retrain and graduated from Leicester Medical School in 2015.I was based at Uppingham Surgery as a GP Registrar in August 2020. Following completion of my GP training, I was thrilled to join the practice in 2022 as a salaried GP.Away from work I enjoy spending time with my young family, as well as playing football and indoor climbing.

Dr Laura Stephens qualified from the University of St Andrews Medical School (2010 BSc(Hons) winning the class medal, and subsequently graduated from the University of Manchester (MBChB) where she represented her peers for 3 years and played medics hockey. She then embarked on her foundation training at Peterborough and Frimley Park hospitals.

Thereafter she spent time as a General Duties Medical Officer (GDMO) in the British Army serving in Kenya with the Grenadier Guards and completed an MD(Res) on the trauma sustained by civilians and combatants during the armed conflict in Afghanistan published in the Lancet e-clinical medicine journal 2022.

She left the army to start a family and completed her GP training as a registrar in North West London,  in 2022 and joined the practice in Sept 2024. Laura has 3 kids, enjoys open water swimming and devotes her spare time to run a local playgroup in the community serving the families that she practices medicine for.

Carol Crewe – Nurse Manager

Practice Nurse

Kerry completed her nurse training in 2011, at Birmingham City University, whilst in the Royal Air Force (RAF). Post qualification she spent 5 years in Secondary Care at Peterborough City Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, working alongside civilian colleagues. This provided her with a wide variety of nursing experience working on Orthopaedics, Surgical and Burns wards.

On leaving the RAF in 2016, she took up the role of Anticoagulant Specialist Nurse at Peterborough City Hospital, before joining the team here at Uppingham Surgery as a Practice Nurse in 2019.

Kerry is an Independent Nurse Prescriber specialising in Anticoagulation and Diabetes.

In her spare time, she enjoys playing trombone, euphonium and drums and is a member of a Big Band and a Brass Band. She is also a ‘fair weather’ cyclist.

Liane Andrews

Healthcare Assistant

Liane started her career in healthcare in 1999 as a Patient Services Administrator at a GP Practice in Hertfordshire.  In 2002 she changed roles to HCA taking on many new skills including wound care, Spirometry, ECG, new patient health checks and adult immunisations. 

She joined Uppingham Surgery in 2015 after relocating to the area.   Liane has further expanded her role to include phlebotomy, health promotion and diabetes.

She also assists the GP’s with the minor surgery clinics. Liane lives with her husband and has 2 grown up children.

In her spare time she is a Rainbow Guide Leader and also enjoys cooking and eating out.

Joanne Nicol

Joanne qualified as a midwife in 1984 at the Leicester Royal Infirmary but gave up her career in 1989 to look after her 2 daughters. 

She joined the Uppingham Surgery in 2004 as a phlebotomist.  Joanne lives with her husband and in her spare time enjoys circuit classes, cycling, shopping and travel.

I qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1984 and after a background of Surgical ward work I left the hospital setting and proceeded with District Nurse training.  

As a District Nurse I learnt the foundations of Practice Nursing and in 1995 started training as and working predominantly as a Practice Nurse.  

Over the years my interest, experience and qualifications have led me to and enabled me to specialise in Women’s health, Contraception and Sexual health.

Clare Jackson has been with Uppingham Surgery since 2005 and has a strong repertoire of skills that she brings to the Management role, ranging from clinical to business administration.

Vicki Abbott

Practice Manager (Operations)

Vicki Abbott has worked in primary care since 1998, and has gained a vast knowledge and experience of the NHS during this time.

Vicki’s main areas of responsibility focus on:

– Patient Safety – prevent or reduce risks, errors and harm through audit, monitoring and reviewing performance

– HR  – we employ over 60 staff here at Uppingham Surgery

– CQC compliance – collate evidence and demonstrate that we are Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led

– Complaints and Compliments   

– Data Protection (GDPR) – patient confidentiality, information governance and IT security

 Vicki feels privileged to work with a compassionate, caring and driven team underpinned by a passion to deliver exemplary patient care.

Out of work Vicki enjoys cooking, spending time with friends and family, shopping, reading, music and fast cars!

Mehboob Pasta

Clinical Pharmacist

Mehboob Pasta is our Clinical Pharmacist here at the surgery working within the Rapid Access Clinic.

Originally from Kenya, Mehboob graduated from Aston University, Birmingham in 2002. He then completed his postgraduate studies in Clinical Pharmacy at De Montfort University, Leicester in 2013. He is a qualified independent prescriber and also works as a prescribing pharmacist for the out of hours service, NHS 111 at the weekend.

He has a broad range of experience in different settings including community pharmacy, home care pharmacy, primary care and in the pharmaceutical industry.

He likes to focus on health awareness and promotion. Mehboob’s interests outside of work include sports (mainly football and cricket), charity work, reading and travelling.
